"Nothing…could ever answer my enthusiastic desires to present
nature, except to copy her in her
own way, alive and moving."
John James Audubon
Dear Friends:
Knowledge of the name John James Audubon is not restricted to artists of the natural world. Audubon is famous for illustrating the birds of North America, but perhaps even more famous because his work has led to the conservation of birds throughout the world. Killing thousands of birds himself in order to capture his subject perfectly, he saw how species would decline and eventually become extinct. In fact, most of the birds he captured in his art are now extinct. An avid writer, he spoke out against the practice of bird hunting, feathers for fashion, and casual sport exposing that they were indeed the enemy of bird species.
The story of John James Audubon is indeed a dramatic one filled with startling happenstances and passion. He trekked through more of the North American continent than virtually anyone of his time. A self-taught artist and a self-made man his name has become synonymous with the America of wilderness and wild things. He was a man who sacrificed a normal family life to pursue his dream of capturing on paper the Birds of America - a ten year endeavor which culminated in a seven-volume set of 650 hand-colored prints published in 1840. (Audubon pinned his prey to a grid in positions that showed them in flight and in action. His grid system is not much different than the Perplexi® used by many of my students today.)
Born in Haiti in 1785, raised in France between the ages of 6 and 18, he moved near to Philadelphia where he met the love of his life, Lucy. They were married and had four children two of whom survived childhood. Lucy and John were a love story that spanned their entire marriage and survived the rigors and disappointments that made up this extraordinary tale. Audubon died in 1851 at his country estate in New York at the age of 65.
The South Florida Museum is currently exhibiting the most wonderful display of Audubon bird paintings complete with quotes from Audubon writings and texts that discuss both process and method. I had the good fortune to attend the opening night of this exhibit and see a film that was created to give a broad and wonderful picture of this interesting man, artist, and conservationist.

To Lose Myself In Love
Let me so lose myself in love

Soaring on the wind current effortlessly, gracefully and joyfully - the Frigate does what it’s perfectly designed for and doesn’t do what it was not designed for. Such a simple concept and natural way of being.
You too were flawlessly designed for soaring on the wings of your joy in the wind currents of a loving, vibrant Universe. You are all “odd birds” in the most delightful sense; a one-of-a-kind creation superbly fashioned for the adventures you wished to explore in this lifetime. You know when you are doing what you were designed for - you feel good - you feel peaceful or delighted, exuberant or like you’ve come home. It often feels like it is the most natural thing in the world - and it is!
