Artists know that right angles decide right angles!

O.M. Braida Omisim #6

Dear Friends:

For many years students have been asking me to put a book together for a Colored Pencil tutorial. It has been an interesting endeavor especially when one considers that Colored Pencil is not the medium of the French Court Period. My thoughts about teaching this subject is to present the workshop from a tools and techniques point of view. As with all my teachings, I am always interested in helping students gain full understanding of the medium and the skills necessary to represent any medium with confidence.

For many years, my own work in colored pencil revolved around field and color study. Colored Pencil is perfect in the field and together with color swatches, a simple way to record subject color. In addition to field color studies, color pencil is wonderful for effective color studies that help students understand how to translate a gray scale value study of a composition into color to insure proper color balance - a prelude to the actual watercolor painting.

When applying this medium to a finished, fine art piece (scientific or not), the artist is faced with blending issues. For one thing, you have edges to contend with. In most cases you are working with papers that have some amount of "tooth". Pencil over paper tooth results in a bumpy surface and ragged edges - even if ever so slight the botanical artist who is so use to crisp edges may find this a bit disconcerting. There are, as with any other medium, tricks to the trade. Blending skills, clean edges, vibrant color, sharp highlights, are all possible to achieve. The only magic wand is "practice."

Let me at this point broaden the prevailing conception that the medium of colored pencil refers to "color rods" wrapped in wooden sticks. Not only are there many different blends of colored pencils (some with wax, some water based, and some neither), but the "color rods" can be short sticks not encased in wood, or even "crayon" type sticks. In addition, there are colored pencils that are soft and some that are hard. To build color you can gently apply layers, or build with gusto and burnishing, or you can even "melt" the color with blenders and turpentine. The world of colored pencil art takes on a whole new meaning when the artists begins to realize the vast resources of color, paper, and application that can be used.

For Academy students and others who have been developing their drawing skills, the colored pencil medium can become a very exciting genre and a way to broaden your repertoire of not just botanical art, but all kinds of fine art compositions. Some of you may already be familiar with the colored pencil controversy revolving around colored pencils lightfast qualities. You will be pleased to know that the Colored Pencil Society of America (www.cpsa.org) has been actively pursuing ASTM standards and making great progress. You will want to read more about this here: www.cpsa.org/PRODUCT_RESEARCH/PR.litefast.release.html.

Once you tap into the CPSA website, be sure to check out their gallery and view wonderful examples of colored pencil fine art pieces. Below I've listed some additional colored pencil books you may want to purchase. Colored Pencil Painting Bible: Techniques for Achieving Luminous Color and Ultra-Realistic Effects by Alyona Nickelsen is a companion study aid for anyone wanting to take the Academy Colored Pencil course.

Remember, the first Academy @ Selby workshops of the season is scheduled for October 19-21. Those of you who travel to Sarasota to study can pick up a fourth and fifth day by attending Studio 20 on Thursday, October 22 and Friday, October 23. In fact, I've placed the October and November Selby classes only two weeks apart so traveling students can take advantage of ten teaching days in a four-week visit. Call me about this and we can set up a personalized study plan, or just call to catch up and let me know how you are.

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful Fall weather, preparing your pumpkins and grateful hearts for all that we have, can behold, and can share.

God bless. OM

Greetings to Kentucky students now working with Academy Instructor Leslie Ramsey.

Just a word of encouragement to all beginners.....

The Academy program is sequential, so as my husband says, "Don't override your headlights!." In other words, just try to focus on each book's goals. The skills achieved by finishing one course will prepare you for the next. Feel free to email me your work. I'd love to see your progress.

INTRODUCING
FINE ARTIST RON SANDERS, PAA
THE ACADEMY'S NEWEST CERTIFIED ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR

Keep this in mind!!!!

This newsletter announces a very exciting Advanced Certificate Program the Academy is offering. The Academy has recently appointed renowned artist, Ron Sanders, as a Certified Academy Instructor.

Ron Sanders is an extremely talented artist and the Academy of Botanical Art is proud to have him as part of their education team.

Ron is a Signature Member of the Paint America Association and Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America. With his inclusion in numerous national juried exhibitions and ever increasing Best of Show Awards, this dedicated artist houses his beautiful work in both private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Indiana State Museum Collection. Recent awards include First Place in the 2009 Richeson 75: Portrait/Figure competition and the Most Innovative Painting Award at the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society “Best of America 2008” exhibition.

Ron integrates design, draftsmanship, and layered painting techniques of his classical training with the color, texture and edges inspired by impressionism. Ron has a developed and thorough understanding of color theory and paint application which explains his advanced skill in expressing temperature and edge shifts that occur in natural light. He is author of the book Color Mixing/Color Matching: How to mix clean bright colors and beautiful neutrals.

In an effort for the Academy to offer students advanced techniques in painting that will assist in creating authentic habitats in combination with their botanicals, the Academy is delighted to offer this fall:

Advanced Studies in Nature Painting
Habitat Painting for Nature Artists
& Botanical Painters

Ron's experience in historical painting and his vast knowledge of color theory and application will help guide not only botanical artists but nature artists and plein air artists to a higher level of expertise.

In conjunction with the Marie Selby Botanical Garden, the Academy will be offering a Certificate in Advance Studies to those individuals who complete the four course program and submit a "Senior Thesis" painting for review.

It is an honor to have Ron Sanders on our staff and we look forward to some very beautiful work coming out of this program.
