Dear Friends:
Welcome to another year filled with the promise of things to come. Here at the Academy we are planning a few new ventures that although too soon to tell all about, we encourage you to stay in touch so you wont skip a beat and be able to participate whenever you can in our various escapades.
Another one of my students has recently graduated from the Botanical Art & Illustration Certificate Program, Ms. Susan Benjamin. Her final independent study presentation was just beautiful and a fine example of all the learning and hard work. We send our congratulations to her with our best wishes for her continued success.
This year will see several more students graduating and to those in the middle of their final thesis, let me encourage you to feel inspired by your terrific accomplishment. We look forward to seeing the fruits of your labor.
And speaking of fruits and inspiration, this Christmas I had the pleasure of nature adorning both my front and back yard with fruits in full bloom and the color of red. Our yard was on fire to the delight of students and guests who stopped by to work and play. May these good wishes we send ignite your 2010 and set your hearts ablaze with unstoppable creativity.
God bless. OM
Drawing Palm Trees
The enormous variety of palm trees makes them a great asset in the landscape and in that arena most of us have come to know about them. Palms, however, have many other valuable assets including the wealth they contribute to food, medicine, industry. From Palm Oil Plantations, to Dates, to rattan furniture, to coconut food and flavorings, Palms have an enormous impact on our lives. It has been said that palms represent the third most important plant family with respect to human use. A good reason to hold them in high esteem and find ways to portray their beauty.
Veitchia merrillii
Known commonly as the "Christmas Palm" is an evergreen palm native to the small islands of the Philippines located north of Malaysia and Indonesia.
Christmas Palm has single swollen at the base grey trunk that is sectioned by old leaf scars. It is propagated to grow with multi stem trunks as in this photo where you see four stems. Its pinnate fronds emerge from the short light green crown shaft. Arching leaves are 5ft long with sharp-edged leaflets that are 2ft long. This moderately fast growing palm can get to about 20ft tall.
It produces creamy flowers followed by green oval fruits that turn to bright red as they ripe. Hanging in clusters fruits look like Christmas ornaments, hence their common name Christmas Palm.
This December the fruits on my three Christmas Palms began to turn bright red, just in time for the holidays. With all the festivities it took me till the 28th of December to take these pictures. Alas their color started to pale, but hopefully these pics will give you some idea of how pretty this tree is and how worthy of artistic representation.
Unfortunately or fortunately, the fruit does not attract wildlife. On the University of Florida extension website we are advised that: "Adonidia merrillii (syn. Veitchia merrillii) Seeds sometimes used as substitute for betelnut." Note that Adonidia is no longer used for the genus and has been reclassified as Veitchia.
The Academy of Botanical Art's course on "Palms for the Botanical Artist" will help you explore palms and provide ideas for artwork that you may find ways to exhibit. The International Palm Society (the largest society of palm enthusiasts in the world), and the Palm & Cycad Societies of Florida, Inc., The Guild of Natural Science (GNSI), the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and the Florida Society of Botanical Art (FSBA) to name a few often offer illustration opportunities and exhibitions which you may want to become aware of.
Although the Academy of Botanical Art for Local and Distance Learning is not an official part of these organizations or their exhibitions, other than being a member, we are a strong advocate of their fine work. In accordance with our belief in helping botanical artists learn as much as they can about this topic, we recommend Palms for Botanical Artists by Botanist, John Beckner as a useful tool to those who wish to develop their understanding of palms. Mr. Beckner has prepared this course for the Academy. The ideas discussed in this course will certainly be of help to those who want to learn more about palms as well as those who may want to participate in future exhibitions.
Good luck. OM

INTRODUCING FINE ARTIST RON SANDERS, PAA
THE ACADEMY'S NEWEST CERTIFIED ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR
The Academy has recently appointed renowned artist, Ron Sanders, as a Certified Academy Instructor. Ron Sanders is an extremely talented artist and the Academy of Botanical Art is proud to have him as part of their education team.
Ron is a Signature Member of the Paint America Association and Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America. With his inclusion in numerous national juried exhibitions and ever increasing Best of Show Awards, this dedicated artist houses his beautiful work in both private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Indiana State Museum Collection. Recent awards include First Place in the 2009 Richeson 75: Portrait/Figure competition and the Most Innovative Painting Award at the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society “Best of America 2008” exhibition.
Ron integrates design, draftsmanship, and layered painting techniques of his classical training with the color, texture and edges inspired by impressionism. Ron has a developed and thorough understanding of color theory and paint application which explains his advanced skill in expressing temperature and edge shifts that occur in natural light. He is author of the book Color Mixing/Color Matching: How to mix clean bright colors and beautiful neutrals.
In an effort for the Academy to offer students advanced techniques in painting that will assist in creating authentic habitats in combination with their botanicals, the Academy is delighted to offer this fall:
Ron's experience in historical painting and his vast knowledge of color theory and application will help guide not only botanical artists but nature artists and plein air artists to a higher level of expertise.
In conjunction with the Marie Selby Botanical Garden, the Academy will be offering a Certificate in Advance Studies to those individuals who complete the four course program and submit a "Senior Thesis" painting for review.
It is an honor to have Ron Sanders on our staff and we look forward to some very beautiful work coming out of this program.

"The merry year is born Like the bright berry from the naked thorn."
Hartley Coleridge
~
"Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us."
Hal Borland
~
"Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past."
Henry Ward Beecher
~
"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."
Edith Lovejoy Pierce
~
"A happy New Year! Grant that I
May bring no tear to any eye
When this New Year in time shall end
Let it be said I've played the friend,
Have lived and loved and labored here,
And made of it a happy year."
Edgar Guest
~
"The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective."
