Dear Friends:
After vigorously shaking my glass snow globe, I rest it upon the table and peer inside to the little village scene. What a delight! I can see you buzzing about, putting away your paints and brushes to make room for the colors of the holiday. I see you wrapping, and packing, cleaning and cooking, and hiding away the gifts of love in preparation for celebration with loved ones. I am there with you, joining you in celebration, cheering your 2008 feats of daring and Olympic achievements. The new year plans to be a busy one and I look forward to working with you again and learning from each other. And just in case you are beginning to doubt that Angels exist, here’s an old story to keep us young. God bless. OM
Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus
Editorial Page, New York Sun, 1897
Editor: Francis P. Church
We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:
Dear Editor---
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O'Hanlon
Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except that which they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to have men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest men, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernatural beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Christmas Prayer
by Robert Louis Stevenson
"Loving Father, Help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the song of angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clean hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be Thy children, and the Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake, Amen!"
˜
How far that little candle throws his beams!
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.
-William Shakespeare
˜
There is always a certain peace in being what one is, in being that completely.
-Ugo Betti
˜
We never know how high we are till we are called to rise and then,
if we are true to plan our statures touch the skies.
-Margaret Cousins (1905- )
Senior Editor Doubleday Publishing Company
˜
Were I a philosopher, I should write a philosophy of toys,
showing that nothing else in life need to be taken seriously,
and that Christmas Day in the company of children
is one of the few occasions on which men become entirely alive.

The South Florida Museum is happy to announce GROSSology!, a winter "mini-camp" for students in grades 2-5. GROSSology! will be, well, gross, but your kids will develop a hands-on understanding of the science behind gross things. Gross and educational? Who could resist that combination?
Summer Camps Director Sarah Hammock will once again be leading this scientifically-based camp. There will also be another teacher assisting in the instruction and activities, and volunteers assisting the class.
There are only a few seats left!
This program is expected to fill quickly!
