Dear Friends:

This summer I had a terrible computer crash. It has taken months to fix the issues that resulted. Although I’m not quite up and running, but just up and hobbling, I wanted to pass on this excellent and helpful information about forwarding emails.

With the help of some websites and a little research, I’d like all my family, friends and students to know the best way to forward emails. It ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails so please take the time to read it.

So here goes, it’s worth the read….

Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their e-mail addresses and names.

As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for someone to get a virus. His or her computer can send that virus to every E-mail address that has come across his computer.

This list that is collected allows someone to take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit.

If you haven’t already done this, here’s what we are told will stop this collection of valuable email addresses:

When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message(at the top). Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.

Often when I want to send on an interesting email, I simply copy that portion I want to send and paste the content into a new email with a new subject and all the email address in the BCC section.

Whether you forward or cut and paste to send on an email to more than one person, Do NOT use the To: or Cc: fields for adding e-mail addresses of others. Instead, always use the BCC:(blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail addresses and leave the “TO” field blank. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your BCC: option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it.

Remove any "FW :" and re-name the subject.

ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent.

About petitions that have you to add your name and address and then tell you to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses. A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. DO NOT put your email address on any petition.

More About supporting petitions: Rather than sign the list, send your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (And don't believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, we are told it isn’t so!)

About emails that say, "Send this email to 10 people…etc. This is a device to gain lists of emails. So if you do pass them along, do so without addresses showing.

About the “bad luck ones” – Just more list gathering.

About 'Amber Alert' , or 'Virus Alert', etc. check them out before you forward them.

Here are some website references about email scams and authenticating email information. Obviously I am not an expert on this but when I did a search the following websites keep popping up. There are many more to be sure, but these will give you a start to your own investigation:

If you want to question the authenticity of a statement, an email, an opinion, before you pass it on, then go to Snopes. According to Wikipedia, “Snopes, also known as the Urban Legends Reference Pages, is a web site that is the most widely-known resource for validating or debunking urban legends, Internet rumors, e-mail forwards, and other such stories of uncertain or questionable origin in popular culture. Snopes is run by Barbara and David Mikkelson, a California couple who met on the alt.folklore.urban newsgroup. The Mikkelsons also founded the San Fernando Valley Folklore Society, and were credited as the owners of the site until 2005. The site is organized according to topic and includes a message board where questionable stories and pictures may be posted.”

This website tells you about software that tracks email addresses: http://find-emails.qarchive.org

To learn more about email etiquette visit: http://www.emailreplies.com/

Scamdex Email Scam, Internet Fraud, Identity Theft & Phishing Resource. Scamdex aims to educate and inform: www.scamdex.com

How to Avoid e-mail scams by Microsoft: Microsoft/AOL E-Mail Tracking

And when all else fails, try the FBI and get e-mail updates when new scams and warnings are posted there. If you have received a scam e-mail notify the IC3 by filing a complaint at www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm.

Thanks for reading and hopefully no one we know personally will crash their computers from junk mail we forward. God bless. OM

Yes to Yeses

Simply become aware, without feeling
remiss or judgment,
that in your moments of worry and concern
life did not work, and in your
moments of happiness it did.
Look back and notice
that the current of joy was there all along
waiting for you to say yes,
for you to re-choose differently,
waiting for you to step back into
the constant river of well-being.

In all dimmed or dark passageways
created by saying
yes to nos and no to yeses
this river of joy, love,
appreciation and compassion
can be found and followed.

This is the path of grace.
It is the simple act of saying yes to yeses,
saying yes to your hearts propensity to love
and laugh and live large
and in so doing naturally say no to nos.

Dear Friends:

What a wonderful trip to “horse country.” Lexington, Kentucky is a beautiful town and my new friends and students at the Arboretum/Kentucky University made my visit all the more enjoyable.

Roaming about the Kentucky countryside and visiting the beautiful gardens and horse ranches reminded me of my early years on horseback. I was getting quite good at riding in those young days, then stopped and didn’t ride again until while living in St. Croix my roommate bought a horse. So, says I, “I’ll just saddle up the horse and go for a trot.” Sorry to say the horse had other ideas and just like an old time Laurel and Hardy movie “Ollie” threw one leg over the fidgety horse with such “savoir faire” that I landed not on the horse but on the other side of the ground!

Working with my delightful new students and spending a week amidst the garden flowers, I had the pleasure of feeling the presence of my favorite aunt, Nancy Rapier Cirillo. Nancy was born in Kentucky and eventually married Frank Cirillo, an Italian violinist from New York where they opened the Cirillo School of Music. That’s how my side of the family got involved! They were like surrogate parents to me and I love them both dearly. Nancy was a pianist, an artist, a culinary chef who loved desserts. She passed at 100 years of age last September and I just know she spent that week with us drawing flowers again on porcelain.

And there was more magic….just before leaving for Kentucky our
Academy botanist, John Beckner, submitted to me information about two very famous Kentucky botanists he thought students would like to know about. Upon entering the Arboretum, we discovered the most wonderful exhibit of six famous Kentucky botanists and artists, two of whom were John’s favorite picks. The irascible Rafinesque and the productive Sadie Price.

Rafinesque was the first professor of natural history west of the Allegheny Mountains, teaching at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. His years at Transylvania, 1819-26, though troubled were among his most productive publishing scientific names, both locally and in Europe, for plants and animals. He became interested also in prehistoric Indian sites—identifying 148 of them in Kentucky alone. John Beckner writes, “the tragicomedic life of Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (1783-1840) is extraordinary. He published perhaps 950 papers, books, notes, on Botany worldwide. He also wrote about animals, philosophy, banking, the Bible, poetry, etc. He wrote of natural hybrid orchids and plant evolution long before Darwin. He insulted, shocked, enraged, outraged everyone. In the 1930’s Donald Peattig noted that the Encyclopedia Britannica did not include his name. It does now. Rafinesque described many new genera and species and plants, and a significant number had
to be accepted by the kicking and screaming botanists! The literature about Rafinesque is enormous. It takes over five pages of very fine print to list it in one standard reference. It is not surprising that many think of him as a botanical counterpoint to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He has also been compared to Roger Bacon, Paracelsus, Alexander von Humboldt, Darwin, Linnaeus. Peattig said, ‘of all the naturalists who have ever worked on the American continent, Rafinesque is the only one who might clearly be called a Titan.’”

Sarah Frances "Sadie" Price (1849-1903) was born in Indiana. The family moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky while Sadie was an infant. Price spent much of her life as a semi-invalid. John Beckner elaborates, “Sadie, orphaned after the war, made her living by teaching, botanizing, and painting often from her bed. Considered an excellent teacher, she led field trips, fully dressed in respectable skirts. She corresponded with far away experts at universities, wrote 40 plus papers, collected specimens, catalogued, illustrated and painted Kentucky dried specimens, living plants, birds, bird’s eggs, insects in life stages, freshwater fish and shells, and even clouds and stars. An exhibit of watercolor sketches of Warren County's native plants and birds took first place in its class at Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The principal collection of Price's work, numbering over 965 pieces, resides at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.”

Other greats of the area….

Andre Michaux (1746-1802), considered the “most indefatigable explorer this country has ever known,” is responsible for publishing the first book on the Flora of North America, North American Oaks, and making countless other discoveries.

Francois Andre Michaux (1770-1855) son of Andre Michaux, arrived in Kentucky in 1802 to conduct studies of forestry and agriculture. His “writings offer a glimpse of the natural environment of the state two centuries ago.” Michaux’s in his account of Kentucky’s natural environment gave “vivid descriptions of the wide expanses of forest, the huge trees, and the great natural beauty of the region” as is still evidenced today.( Plant Life of Kentucky, Jones. Pg 74)

William Clark (1770 –1838) was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor. A native of Virginia, he also grew up in pre-statehood Kentucky. Along with Meriwether Lewis (1774–1809), Clark led the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803 to 1805 across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean.

Charles Wilkins Short, (1794-1863) graduated in 1810 from Transylvania University, and in 1815 from University of Pennsylvania medical school. He practiced medicine in frontier Kentucky where he was born and raised but devoted his leisure time to Botany. At his death his vast herbarium was bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institution and then it passed to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.

And

For those of you who visit or live in Kentucky, you may want to check out the Kentucky Society of Natural History a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1943 to promote the study of nature and the natural sciences.

Well, it was a story of gardens, horses, adventure, hard work, falling down, getting up, moving on and just desserts. “No whimps!” I called out to the students. The only way to break into a gallop is to “spur” yourself onward. And so they did, we did. Thank you everyone for a great week! And to anyone who has put down their pencil or paint brush, it’s time to get back on the horse. God bless. OM

This publication is just the tip of an iceberg.
Palms are plants inclined to large dimensions.
They are very numerous and more varied than you first imagine.  This text is for the person interested in illustrating them in various ways;
artistic or scientific and as a motif for crafts. But nearly all of it will be useful to plant lovers, tropical nature fans, gardeners and other people.
ideals - this alone is worth the struggle.

We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Aristotle

When on the brink of complete discouragement, success is discerning that... the line between failure and success is so fine that often a single extra effort is all that is needed to bring victory out of defeat.

Yes to Yeses

Simply become aware, without feeling
remiss or judgment,
that in your moments of worry and concern
life did not work, and in your
moments of happiness it did.
Look back and notice
that the current of joy was there all along
waiting for you to say yes,
for you to re-choose differently,
waiting for you to step back into
the constant river of well-being.

In all dimmed or dark passageways
created by saying
yes to nos and no to yeses
this river of joy, love,
appreciation and compassion
can be found and followed.

This is the path of grace.
It is the simple act of saying yes to yeses,
saying yes to your hearts propensity to love
and laugh and live large
and in so doing naturally say no to nos.

Dear Friends:

We all know what happens when you plant a few seeds. Things start popping up, grow, and take on a life of their own.... well, the Academy's been a buzz all summer tending a strong distance learning garden from which even local students are reaping benefits.

Our exciting news of the month is that the prestigious Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is now the official certifying Garden for the Academy of Botanical Art Certificate Program, separate from and not to be confused with the Ringling College of Art and Design's Certificate Program in Botanical Art & Illustration which is still going strong and still based on the O.M. Braida Ten Step series of books.

In addition to the Academy's Certificate in Botanical Art & Illustration being certified by one of the leading orchid research gardens of the world, the Marie Selby Botanical Garden is offering a "Golden Orchid Award" to students who attend their review in person and make a "presentation" of their work to the review committee here in Sarasota, Florida. Free accommodations are even available on a first register, first serve basis for this special event. The student's FINAL INDEPENDENT STUDY presentation will now include as its 4th watercolor painting an Orchid or Bromeliad in honor of the Garden. Students will be able to communicate with Selby botanists to help them decide on which orchid to illustrate for this auspicious occasion

For those of you not already a part of the Academy Certificate Program, we are happy to report that this flexible program allows for distance learners to tailor a schedule of botanical art training to their needs that includes phone tutored lessons, classes with the Ringling College of Art and Design, the Marie Selby Botanical Garden, and Academy workshops now offered in several locations. Distance learners are even able to take advantage of classes offered in their hometown as part of their study program. There is hardly an excuse left not to join the Academy's growing school.

Now that's not all we've been up to this summer..... Our Botanical Drawing III book, which has been revised several times since 2003 to include the study of Orchids, has been rewritten. It is in its final change and is now called Botanical Drawing IIIA, Botanical Exploration for Botanical Reference. It was rewritten to focus completely on Historical Relevance and Orchids.

In addition, John Beckner and I have been sprucing up the Plant Morphology for Artists, Volume 10, and are happy with the new 86-Page edition. It offers more examples in support of the required student projects. We even have a course pak now for this volume, which does its best to provide additional information about plant description and terminology. See pricing below on our books and course paks.

Speaking of John Beckner, he has written a very fascinating story for you about Orchid pollen that I think you will enjoy. I hope that you are all well and having a splendid summer. I love to hear from you so please send an email and let me know how you are making out with your art. God bless. OM

BROWN ORCHID POLLEN
AND WHERE IT ALL LED....

by John Beckner, Botanist

By the late 1600's the microscope was in use. Tiny living objects were found and initially assumed to be animals of sorts. In the late 1700's, it was finally realized that the pollination of flowers was a fact (never mind that this had been known in Asia for millennia!) Pollen grains, and other tiny objects, were uncooperative -- jumping and jerking about, in ways that made their study difficult. It was reasonable at first to assume that little fins or legs or some such thing caused the motions. But these were not found and inert particles such as dust were equally lively. (We still do not adequately understand how many bacteria move.)

In the early 1800's a group of explorers, including the botanical artists, the BAUERS, and a British Botanist, Robert Brown, discovered the incredible plant life of Australia. Their disastrous series of adventures are too involved to discuss here. (Read more about this in the New Drawing IIIA book). When Brown finally got back home, he devoted himself to study of the amazing Australian terrestrial orchids. Most tropical epiphytic orchids have their pollen in a few (usually 2, 4, or 8) distinct waxy lumps, called pollinia. These terrestrials, like quite a few elsewhere, have loose powdery pollen, differing only in detail from a rose or hibiscus.

In the 1820's and 30's, microscopes were greatly improved and biology took a major advance. In 1828, Brown wrote a paper on the motion of pollen grains. His orchids were too precious to experiment on, so he looked at pollen of easily grown garden flowers.

For seven decades physicists, chemists, and biologists argued. For about 23 centuries, the idea of atoms had also tormented scholars. By 1900, the chemical elements were recognized as the basis of matter. But was each element made up of a distinct kind of atom? Were atoms anything more than a metaphor, a useful teaching image? Some very eminent scientists were denying atoms; some others were agnostic, saying they honestly did not know. A few thought atoms were real.

Shortly after 1900, a young German physicist, working as a patent examiner in Berne, Switzerland, gave up on trying for a Ph.D. He called the whole academic process a "comedy." So he wrote five short papers on ideas he had. Each was highly mathematical; each was a revolution in science. All were published in 1905 and early 1906. One of the papers discussed Brownian Motion and used it as proof that atoms were real! (There were other extraordinary things in these papers, such as the photoelectric phenomena that open supermarket doors.) (And there was a very short equation, which used with the proven reality of atoms, plus the quantum nature of energy in two other papers, led to the vaporization of two cities in Japan, exactly 40 years later!) The young man, of course, was Albert Einstein. Within a few years, he had a Ph.D. (one of the professors said his dissertation was 700 words short. Einstein added one sentence and got the degree! Comedy for sure.)

It is very easy to estimate the volume of a pollen grain or dust particle. If it floats in a liquid it must be about the same density as the liquid. But zigzagging, jumping, going in all directions in fractions of a second is very hard to measure. Many people will agree that Einstein was a very clever man. He measured the Brownian Motion, not as if it was a billiard ball, rather as if it was a gas cloud spreading in space.

Scientists accepted atoms (save a tiny number) within a few years. They cannot be ignored, or thought of as a mere ivory tower, tempest-in-a-teapot. They may save us or destroy us, either way they will change mankind. Pretty little intricate flowers, growing among strange plants near a river with black swans, led to this! JB

They are very numerous and more varied than you first imagine.  This text is for the person interested in illustrating them in various ways;
artistic or scientific and as a motif for crafts.
Yes to Yeses

Simply become aware, without feeling
remiss or judgment,
that in your moments of worry and concern
life did not work, and in your
moments of happiness it did.
Look back and notice
that the current of joy was there all along
waiting for you to say yes,
for you to re-choose differently,
waiting for you to step back into
the constant river of well-being.

In all dimmed or dark passageways
created by saying
yes to nos and no to yeses
this river of joy, love,
appreciation and compassion
can be found and followed.

This is the path of grace.
It is the simple act of saying yes to yeses,
saying yes to your hearts propensity to love
and laugh and live large
and in so doing naturally say no to nos.
