The Academy is very proud to be associated with the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. They have been a wonderful resource for our studies in botanical art and make available to our students their collections and library that enable us to make our research complete. This past March, the Academy held one of its monthly workshops at the Gardens and to our delight we were visited by Angel Lara, Greenhouse Manager. Angel (appropriately named I might add) stopped by our class to demystify an orchid classification. Satisfying us that we had correctly named our little orchid, he went on to show us how we could self pollinate orchids. We took our jubilation to new heights when the Interim Director, Center for Environmental Education, Marilynn Shelley, invited us to visit the Selby Gardens Research Library where longtime volunteer librarian, Pep Ruddiman, gave us a tour of their Research Library and thrilled us with a look at their rare book and botanical art collection. Research Library at Selby Gardens is one of the finest botanical libraries in the SE United States and an important source of literature for the entire western hemisphere. The library specializes on New World tropical and subtropical botany, ecology, and horticulture. A searchable catalogue is also available on-line. <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/Selby-Library-Photo.jpg" alt="Selby Library Photo" /> Left to Right: Eleanor Thurston, Olivia Braida, Susan McDonald, Cynthia Rice, and Librarian Pep Ruddiman. You see us above huddled over a book from the Curtis Magazine Collection. The beautiful illustrations in these very old books looked as fresh and new as if we painted them today. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the leader in the study, conservation, and display of epiphytes and their canopy habitats. Their collection of epiphytes is the best in the world. Visitors see beautiful horticultural displays and learn from various educational programs and lectures taking away a better understanding and greater appreciation of the natural world and the challenges it faces. Living Collection at Selby Gardens with 12,000+ accessions is the best in the world for its representation of warm-tropical epiphytes. The main epiphyte families, such as Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Gesneriaceae are particularly well-represented. Several pictorials of the collection are available for viewing online. This globally significant collection of living and preserved plant collections, as well as botanical literature, to support its programs of research, conservation, education, and display, together with professional staff and subtropics location, provide one of the finest environments for tropical botanical studies in the world. Just last year they published a wonderful dictionary on orchid genera. Raven <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/dictionary.gif" alt="Dictionary of Orchid Genera" width="112" height="150" align="left" style="margin-right:5px;" />The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera is a collaborative project of Peg Alrich and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Orchid Identification Center. It is intended to fill a void in the existing reference material by providing a comprehensive and updated source of information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of the orchid family. The dictionary is the most comprehensive collection of orchid genera nomenclature to date with over 3800 names. This easy-to-navigate full-color book measures 8.5 x 11 (21.5 cm x 28 cm) and contains over 500 pages which present the current status of orchid taxonomy and the history of generic names, making it an important reference for botanists, taxonomists, orchid lovers and horticultural specialists. Easy to read and understand, the color-coded, fact-filled pages are complete with color illustrations or line drawings for each genus. Each genus description for the more than 3000 orchid genera names includes the author(s) name, publication name, as well as page number and year of publication. Accepted genera include subfamily, tribe, and subtribe placement. The etymologies have been carefully researched and greatly expanded from other listings. Each genus has its type species or lectotype listed, the number of species credited to the genus, and the species distribution. Also included is a brief description of the plants and flowers of the genus. Additionally the dictionary includes an introductory overview of the orchid family by David Benzing, the well-known epiphyte ecologist. The Academy is very proud to be associated with the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. They have been a wonderful resource for our studies in botanical art and make available to our students their collections and library that enable us to make our research complete. This past March, the Academy held one of its monthly workshops at the Gardens and to our delight we were visited by Angel Lara, Greenhouse Manager. Angel (appropriately named I might add) stopped by our class to demystify an orchid classification. Satisfying us that we had correctly named our little orchid, he went on to show us how we could self pollinate orchids. We took our jubilation to new heights when the Interim Director, Center for Environmental Education, Marilynn Shelley, invited us to visit the Selby Gardens Research Library where longtime volunteer librarian, Pep Ruddiman, gave us a tour of their Research Library and thrilled us with a look at their rare book and botanical art collection. Research Library at Selby Gardens is one of the finest botanical libraries in the SE United States and an important source of literature for the entire western hemisphere. The library specializes on New World tropical and subtropical botany, ecology, and horticulture. A searchable catalogue is also available on-line. <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/Selby-Library-Photo.jpg" alt="Selby Library Photo" /> Left to Right: Eleanor Thurston, Olivia Braida, Susan McDonald, Cynthia Rice, and Librarian Pep Ruddiman. You see us above huddled over a book from the Curtis Magazine Collection. The beautiful illustrations in these very old books looked as fresh and new as if we painted them today. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the leader in the study, conservation, and display of epiphytes and their canopy habitats. Their collection of epiphytes is the best in the world. Visitors see beautiful horticultural displays and learn from various educational programs and lectures taking away a better understanding and greater appreciation of the natural world and the challenges it faces. Living Collection at Selby Gardens with 12,000+ accessions is the best in the world for its representation of warm-tropical epiphytes. The main epiphyte families, such as Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Gesneriaceae are particularly well-represented. Several pictorials of the collection are available for viewing online. This globally significant collection of living and preserved plant collections, as well as botanical literature, to support its programs of research, conservation, education, and display, together with professional staff and subtropics location, provide one of the finest environments for tropical botanical studies in the world. It is intended to fill a void in the existing reference material by providing a comprehensive and updated source of information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of the orchid family. The dictionary is the most comprehensive collection of orchid genera nomenclature to date with over 3800 names. This easy-to-navigate full-color book measures 8.5 x 11 (21.5 cm x 28 cm) and contains over 500 pages which present the current status of orchid taxonomy and the history of generic names, making it an important reference for botanists, taxonomists, orchid lovers and horticultural specialists. Easy to read and understand, the color-coded, fact-filled pages are complete with color illustrations or line drawings for each genus. Each genus description for the more than 3000 orchid genera names includes the author(s) name, publication name, as well as page number and year of publication. The Academy is very proud to be associated with the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. They have been a wonderful resource for our studies in botanical art and make available to our students their collections and library that enable us to make our research complete. This past March, the Academy held one of its monthly workshops at the Gardens and to our delight we were visited by Angel Lara, Greenhouse Manager. Angel (appropriately named I might add) stopped by our class to demystify an orchid classification. Satisfying us that we had correctly named our little orchid, he went on to show us how we could self pollinate orchids. We took our jubilation to new heights when the Interim Director, Center for Environmental Education, Marilynn Shelley, invited us to visit the Selby Gardens Research Library where longtime volunteer librarian, Pep Ruddiman, gave us a tour of their Research Library and thrilled us with a look at their rare book and botanical art collection. Research Library at Selby Gardens is one of the finest botanical libraries in the SE United States and an important source of literature for the entire western hemisphere. The library specializes on New World tropical and subtropical botany, ecology, and horticulture. A searchable catalogue is also available on-line. <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/Selby-Library-Photo.jpg" alt="Selby Library Photo" /> Left to Right: Eleanor Thurston, Olivia Braida, Susan McDonald, Cynthia Rice, and Librarian Pep Ruddiman. You see us above huddled over a book from the Curtis Magazine Collection. The beautiful illustrations in these very old books looked as fresh and new as if we painted them today. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the leader in the study, conservation, and display of epiphytes and their canopy habitats. Their collection of epiphytes is the best in the world. Visitors see beautiful horticultural displays and learn from various educational programs and lectures taking away a better understanding and greater appreciation of the natural world and the challenges it faces. Living Collection at Selby Gardens with 12,000+ accessions is the best in the world for its representation of warm-tropical epiphytes. The main epiphyte families, such as Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Gesneriaceae are particularly well-represented. Several pictorials of the collection are available for viewing online. This globally significant collection of living and preserved plant collections, as well as botanical literature, to support its programs of research, conservation, education, and display, together with professional staff and subtropics location, provide one of the finest environments for tropical botanical studies in the world. Just last year they published a wonderful dictionary on orchid genera. Raven <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/dictionary.gif" alt="Dictionary of Orchid Genera" width="112" height="150" align="left" style="margin-right:5px;" />The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera is a collaborative project of Peg Alrich and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Orchid Identification Center. It is intended to fill a void in the existing reference material by providing a comprehensive and updated source of information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of the orchid family. The dictionary is the most comprehensive collection of orchid genera nomenclature to date with over 3800 names. This easy-to-navigate full-color book measures 8.5 x 11 (21.5 cm x 28 cm) and contains over 500 pages which present the current status of orchid taxonomy and the history of generic names, making it an important reference for botanists, taxonomists, orchid lovers and horticultural specialists. Easy to read and understand, the color-coded, fact-filled pages are complete with color illustrations or line drawings for each genus. Each genus description for the more than 3000 orchid genera names includes the author(s) name, publication name, as well as page number and year of publication. Accepted genera include subfamily, tribe, and subtribe placement. The etymologies have been carefully researched and greatly expanded from other listings. Each genus has its type species or lectotype listed, the number of species credited to the genus, and the species distribution. Also included is a brief description of the plants and flowers of the genus. Additionally the dictionary includes an introductory overview of the orchid family by David Benzing, the well-known epiphyte ecologist. The Academy is very proud to be associated with the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. They have been a wonderful resource for our studies in botanical art and make available to our students their collections and library that enable us to make our research complete. This past March, the Academy held one of its monthly workshops at the Gardens and to our delight we were visited by Angel Lara, Greenhouse Manager. Angel (appropriately named I might add) stopped by our class to demystify an orchid classification. Satisfying us that we had correctly named our little orchid, he went on to show us how we could self pollinate orchids. We took our jubilation to new heights when the Interim Director, Center for Environmental Education, Marilynn Shelley, invited us to visit the Selby Gardens Research Library where longtime volunteer librarian, Pep Ruddiman, gave us a tour of their Research Library and thrilled us with a look at their rare book and botanical art collection. Research Library at Selby Gardens is one of the finest botanical libraries in the SE United States and an important source of literature for the entire western hemisphere. The library specializes on New World tropical and subtropical botany, ecology, and horticulture. A searchable catalogue is also available on-line. <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/Selby-Library-Photo.jpg" alt="Selby Library Photo" /> Left to Right: Eleanor Thurston, Olivia Braida, Susan McDonald, Cynthia Rice, and Librarian Pep Ruddiman. You see us above huddled over a book from the Curtis Magazine Collection. The beautiful illustrations in these very old books looked as fresh and new as if we painted them today. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the leader in the study, conservation, and display of epiphytes and their canopy habitats. Their collection of epiphytes is the best in the world. Visitors see beautiful horticultural displays and learn from various educational programs and lectures taking away a better understanding and greater appreciation of the natural world and the challenges it faces. Living Collection at Selby Gardens with 12,000+ accessions is the best in the world for its representation of warm-tropical epiphytes. The main epiphyte families, such as Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Gesneriaceae are particularly well-represented. Several pictorials of the collection are available for viewing online. This globally significant collection of living and preserved plant collections, as well as botanical literature, to support its programs of research, conservation, education, and display, together with professional staff and subtropics location, provide one of the finest environments for tropical botanical studies in the world. It is intended to fill a void in the existing reference material by providing a comprehensive and updated source of information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of the orchid family. The dictionary is the most comprehensive collection of orchid genera nomenclature to date with over 3800 names. This easy-to-navigate full-color book measures 8.5 x 11 (21.5 cm x 28 cm) and contains over 500 pages which present the current status of orchid taxonomy and the history of generic names, making it an important reference for botanists, taxonomists, orchid lovers and horticultural specialists. Easy to read and understand, the color-coded, fact-filled pages are complete with color illustrations or line drawings for each genus. Each genus description for the more than 3000 orchid genera names includes the author(s) name, publication name, as well as page number and year of publication. The Academy is very proud to be associated with the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. They have been a wonderful resource for our studies in botanical art and make available to our students their collections and library that enable us to make our research complete. This past March, the Academy held one of its monthly workshops at the Gardens and to our delight we were visited by Angel Lara, Greenhouse Manager. Angel (appropriately named I might add) stopped by our class to demystify an orchid classification. Satisfying us that we had correctly named our little orchid, he went on to show us how we could self pollinate orchids. We took our jubilation to new heights when the Interim Director, Center for Environmental Education, Marilynn Shelley, invited us to visit the Selby Gardens Research Library where longtime volunteer librarian, Pep Ruddiman, gave us a tour of their Research Library and thrilled us with a look at their rare book and botanical art collection. Research Library at Selby Gardens is one of the finest botanical libraries in the SE United States and an important source of literature for the entire western hemisphere. The library specializes on New World tropical and subtropical botany, ecology, and horticulture. You see us above huddled over a book from the Curtis Magazine Collection. The beautiful illustrations in these very old books looked as fresh and new as if we painted them today. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the leader in the study, conservation, and display of epiphytes and their canopy habitats. Their collection of epiphytes is the best in the world. Visitors see beautiful horticultural displays and learn from various educational programs and lectures taking away a better understanding and greater appreciation of the natural world and the challenges it faces. Living Collection at Selby Gardens with 12,000+ accessions is the best in the world for its representation of warm-tropical epiphytes. The main epiphyte families, such as Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Gesneriaceae are particularly well-represented. Several pictorials of the collection are available for viewing online. This globally significant collection of living and preserved plant collections, as well as botanical literature, to support its programs of research, conservation, education, and display, together with professional staff and subtropics location, provide one of the finest environments for tropical botanical studies in the world. Raven <img src="http://www.omartdesigns.com/newsletters/images/dictionary.gif" alt="Dictionary of Orchid Genera" width="112" height="150" align="left" style="margin-right:5px;" />The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Illustrated Dictionary of Orchid Genera is a collaborative project of Peg Alrich and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Orchid Identification Center. It is intended to fill a void in the existing reference material by providing a comprehensive and updated source of information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of the orchid family. The dictionary is the most comprehensive collection of orchid genera nomenclature to date with over 3800 names. This easy-to-navigate full-color book measures 8.5 x 11 (21.5 cm x 28 cm) and contains over 500 pages which present the current status of orchid taxonomy and the history of generic names, making it an important reference for botanists, taxonomists, orchid lovers and horticultural specialists. Easy to read and understand, the color-coded, fact-filled pages are complete with color illustrations or line drawings for each genus. Each genus description for the more than 3000 orchid genera names includes the author(s) name, publication name, as well as page number and year of publication. Accepted genera include subfamily, tribe, and subtribe placement. The etymologies have been carefully researched and greatly expanded from other listings. Each genus has its type species or lectotype listed, the number of species credited to the genus, and the species distribution. Also included is a brief description of the plants and flowers of the genus. Additionally the dictionary includes an introductory overview of the orchid family by David Benzing, the well-known epiphyte ecologist. OM <h2>Internet Fraud ï¿½ Artists Beware!!!</h2> URGENT ï¿½ PLEASE READ Dear Friends: Many times I have received inquiry by email about persons interested in purchasing my artwork. Although any artist would be anxious to sell their art, I have learned to be extremely cautious about conducting these so-called "internet" sales. Recently I received an email from a woman inquiring about purchasing a piece of my artwork. The first thing I did was to see if I could locate a permanent United States address based on the information she gave me in her email. I could not! I noticed that the English was a bit suspicious as was the sentence structure, the wording, the misspellings, the typing. I also noted that her message included a bit of personal drama and a time crunch. In this case a baby to be born and a move. The gimmick is that once you send the art they tell you something terrible has happened and they must stop the transaction, etc. etc. Below is the actual email this person sent me. And, below her email is the sample email from the Art Scam website. Please read both so you can see the model they follow. Should you feel that an inquiry is legitimate, you will certainly want to get as much information from the client as possible. Be sure to obtain a complete address that is backed up by a credit card, driverï¿½s license, and if possible passport number. Since credit cards can be cancelled after they receive the artwork, it is best to ask for a certified check. Advise your customers that the artwork cannot be sent until the check has been in the bankï¿½s possession for 30 days. This will give the bank time to see if the check is counterfeit. Additionally, never agree to refund an overpayment. If the check is counterfeit, you refunding something you never received!!! Be sure to read the information Iï¿½ve included from the Art Spam website and advise the proper authorities of any occurrence. There is a whole lot more to be said about this and Iï¿½ve included more below. I recommend you read it all and pass it along to others. Get the scoop on the latest Internet art scams and learn how to avoid becoming a victim... Unfortunately, con artists are becoming more sophisticated and fraudulent activities are on the rise. Local police departments and federal agencies such as the FBI are overburdened with mounting cases of identity theft and fraud. Banks and shipping companies are also aware of these scams, but seldom intervene on your behalf. Thus, it is becoming increasingly important to learn how to protect yourself from these threats. While you can't entirely control whether you will become a victim, you can take some steps to minimize your risk. Ways to protect yourself from becoming a victim of a scam: <ol style="margin:0; padding:0 0 0 25px;"> <li>Be skeptical... Artists are increasingly being targeted in Internet scams. After all, what artist hasn't dreamed of being "discovered" and selling several works of art to an admiring collector or a wealthy buyer? A few tell-tale signs to look for in any email you receive from a prospective buyer: misspelled words, poor grammar, and an urgent overseas buyer (particularly one from Nigeria). They also typically want to make the shipping arrangements themselves or have someone pick the work up for them, rather than have you ship it to them -- probably because they don't want the authorities to track them to a particular address. Or worse, they are looking for an excuse to enter your home. <a href="http://www.artscams.com/artscams.html">Email scams aimed at artists >></a> </li> <li>Never ship your artwork to someone without making sure the payment has cleared. Be aware that even though your bank may give you cash for cashier's checks and postal money orders, they can still be counterfeit. Cashier's checks and postal money orders can take up to a month to fully clear. If the payment turns out to be fraudulent, you could be held responsible for the entire amount withdrawn from your bank. </li> <li>Beware if you have been overpaid for an item you are selling by cashier's check or postal money order and have been instructed to return the overpayment amount to the buyer or other party. Never agree to return an overpayment. See explanation #2 above. </li> <li>Don't deal with persons who insist it is "urgent" or those who claim that they need the item in a hurry (perhaps for a gift). Con artists will try to pressure you so you don't have time to ensure the funds have cleared. Vanity galleries charge exhibition fees for artists to exhibit their work, rather than commissions on sales. The fees can be very high and the galleries do not have an incentive to effectively promote your work since they make their money from exhibition fees, rather than sales of your art. The same is true for vanity publications - publishers who charge artists to have their work published. <a href="http://www.artscams.com/resources.html">Links to more advice for artists >></a> </li> <li>Beware of phony emails disguised as legitimate businesses. Criminals attempt to get you to provide personal and confidential information, such as online IDs and passwords, or Social Security numbers and account numbers by posing as your bank, an online payment service such as PayPal (<a href="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/cps/securitycenter/general/UnderstandPhishing-outside" title="PayPal's Phishing Guide">read PayPal's Phishing Guide here</a>), a Credit Card company, or just about any company with which you might do business. COM.EN.ART (COMmunity.ENviroment.ART) is an Artist-in-Residence program for natural history illustrators offered by the Huyck Preserve, a biological field station and 2000-acre nature preserve in the picturesque Hudson Valley hamlet of Rensselaerville, NY. This two-week residency is designed to provide concentrated field experience and study for illustrators, as well as encourage interaction and discussion about nature among artists, with scientists and with the community. The artists contribute a finished piece of artwork and submit a sketch to the Preserveï¿½s ongoing artistsï¿½ sketchbook in exchange for studio and rustic living quarters.
